SKETCHES OF SEA AND SHORE
By means of an introduction, a quote by C.S. Lewis from "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe":
"The castle of Cair Paravel on its little hill towered up above them; before them were the sands, with rocks and little pools of salt water, and seaweed, and the smell of the sea and long miles of bluish-green waves breaking for ever and ever on the beach. And oh, the cry of the seagulls! Have you ever heard it? Can you remember?"
The topic was not chosen by chance: coastlines such as those of Northern France, Cornwall and Norway are a splendid source of inspiration.
The various impressions that I got there have now been translated into these sketches. As such, each piece has its own distinctive character and atmosphere, which facilitates the interpretation.
Despite the pieces' simplicity, I have tried to provide them with a lot of musical content, always with the younger performer in mind.
"Sketches of sea and shore" do not contain barre chords. The finger arrangements for the left hand remain simple and are also well-suited for smaller hands. Still, the pupil can get acquainted with a whole range of techniques which give colour to the whole: glissando, portamento, arpeggio, pizzicato, harmonics, percussion, hammer-on, pull-off.
Finally, I wish everyone much joy with discovering these "Sketches".
